Introduction

Belvedere Football Club was formed in 1971 to provide a dedicated football organization for young people from the North Inner-city area of Dublin. It started as a section of the Belvedere Youth Club, which has been in existence since 1918.

Early Years and Mergers

  • The club entered the Dublin and District Schoolboys League in the season 1971/72 with four teams.
  • Vincent Butler and Fergus McCabe were the founding members of the club.
  • Over the next few years, several local football clubs and football sections of area Youth Clubs merged with Belvedere, making the club bigger and stronger.

Expansion and Quality Improvement

  • Belvedere Football Club grew rapidly in the years following its establishment, thanks in part to mergers with other local football clubs and youth sections.
  • These mergers brought in experienced soccer personnel such as Philip Manly and Marty Farrell, who helped to elevate the quality of the club’s teams.
  • Within just five years of its formation, Belvedere had a team in every Premier section of the Dublin and District Schoolboys League from Under 12 up to Under 18.
  • The club continued to increase the number of teams each season and improved the quality of its sides through dedicated coaching and training.
  • Belvedere’s focus on developing talented young footballers paid off, with many players going on to represent the club at the highest levels and even earning international caps for Ireland and other countries.

Catchment Area Growth

  • Large numbers of families from the North Inner-city moved to the new estates on the northern outskirts of the City in the early seventies, and the club’s catchment area grew as a result.
  • Today, boys from all over the greater Dublin area and well beyond are members.

Coaching Holiday

  • Belvedere ran its first residential Coaching Holiday in Mosney holiday camp in 1974 and continued to run this event every year until 2002.
  • These courses have proved of vital importance in improving the standard of players and creating an overall club spirit.

Major Trophies and International Players

  • Belvedere won its first major trophy, the under 15 Cannon Cup, in 1975, and produced its first Republic of Ireland International, Jesse Travers, at Under 15 level.
  • Since then, the club has won more than 200 major trophies and produced 239 different players who have won international caps for Ireland and other countries at various levels.
  • The club has 16 full internationals to date, including Mark Kennedy, Curtis Fleming, and Stephen Kenny.

Professional Footballers and Coaches

  • Over 350 Belvedere players have made it to professional football clubs in Ireland, the UK, and around the world.
  • Many former Belvedere players have gone on to coach at the very top of world football, including Noel O’Reilly and Stephen Kenny for Ireland, and Kwame Ampadu at Monaco.

Conculsion

  • Belvedere Football Club is committed to improving its status and facilities for the enjoyment and benefit of its members and as a contribution to the progress of football in the Republic of Ireland.
